An Index developed by Local Futures has attempted to do this by using Natural Environment Measures. This index uses four measures: Weather, Natural Beauty, Natural, Natural Environment; and Tranquility. The Horsham District scores above the average for Britain by all measures, except the ‘Natural Beauty’ measure. The district scores particularly strongly on the ‘Tranquility’ measure, with an index score of 398.

Horsham District Demographics


The Horsham District is the 2nd largest Local Authority District in West Sussex covering an area of 205 square miles, 85% of this area is rural, with the South Downs National Park running along the South of the District and the High Weald in the North.

The District has a total population of 132,900. Horsham Town is the main town and economic centre of the District, with a population of around 45k.

The other main population centres are the 6 market towns of Billingshurst, Henfield, Pulborough, Southwater, Steyning and Storrington.

The remaining population is scattered around the rural villages and hamlets.
81% of the population are economically active, higher than the rest of the South East and Great Britain..

The District has a strong track record for entrepreneurship and self employment, with 15.4% of the working population being self employed, higher than the South East and Great Britain.

Unemployment is lower than the rest of the South East and GB and the Horsham District was ranked 7th in the Experian report of the District Council area’s in the Country in terms of its ability to withstand the recession.
