Expand your customer base with an Access Audit

Horsham District Council is keen to help local shops and restaurants open up their business to disabled people by offering them an access audit which will establish how accessible their premises are.

Thousands of shops across Britain are missing out on business because they aren't accessible to disabled users, according to a government audit of over 30,000 premises reported on by the BBC.

There are 12 million disabled people in Britain, with an estimated spending power of £200bn, yet a fifth of shops in Britain have no wheelchair access, only 15% of restaurants and shops have hearing loops and 75% of restaurants do not cater for people with visual impairments.

An access audit from Horsham District Council will help local businesses create action plans to improve the accessibility of their premises.

Commenting on the access audit, Cabinet Member for Living and Working Communities Cllr Claire Vickers said:

"I am really pleased that the council is making this audit available to businesses throughout the district, as not only can it help improve the overall service experience for disabled users, but it may also enable local businesses to expand their services to a wider audience.”
