Current projections suggest that there could be around 155,000 residents in Horsham by 2026 – an increase of around 13%.

District and County Councils oppose second runway at Gatwick

Both Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council voted last week to make objections as part of the Airports Commission’s public consultation on airport expansion plans.

The Airports Commission’s consultation into the future of the UK’s air travel infrastructure closes on Tuesday 3rd February, and West Sussex County Council agreed on a number of improvements to the Gatwick expansion proposal as its official response in a specially convened full council meeting on Monday 19th January. In a separate vote, the County Council reversed its decision of July 2013 and voted to oppose the expansion in principle.

Two days later, Horsham District Council voted to declare its strong opposition to a second runway at Gatwick in an Extraordinary General Meeting. This opposition is based on the belief that the additional jobs created, and the corresponding new residents in the district, would have a fundamental and detrimental impact on current residents and workers. The council also raised concerns about noise pollution from overflying aircraft.

The Airports Commission will publish their final report this summer, and the final decision will be taken by the government.
