Community Safety Partnership - How COSTS can save money and lives

Do you drive for work? Did you know that across Sussex, nearly 30% of all collisions which leave someone dead or seriously injured involve people who were driving for business purposes.

Legally, company owners and managers have a clear duty of care to their employees and the public, especially where the most likely area of conflict is on the roads. The relevant legislation includes the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, Health and Safety Legislation and, of course, the Highway Code (some van drivers, for example, are unaware that different speed limits apply to their vehicle than to cars).

Aside from offering some protection against prosecution in the event of a death or serious injury, there’s a solid business case for having a strong road safety culture within a company. Through being aware of the risks and taking steps to mitigate them, businesses could:

  • Reduce fleet downtime
  • Prevent loss of business through fleet unavailability
  • Reduce fleet repair bills
  • Avoid costly increases to insurance premiums from collisions
  • Protect company reputation
  • Increase profitability
  • And, most importantly, protect the health and welfare of their employees and the public.

To help develop this road safety culture, FREE assistance is available from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership through the COSTS project.
