Sussex Enterprise at the heart of a business-led support infrastructure

Sussex Enterprise welcomes the recent review, ‘No Stone Unturned in Pursuit of Growth’, by Lord Heseltine on growing the economy.  Amongst Lord Heseltine’s recommendations are the following:

“My solution is to build a business support infrastructure in this country, based around chambers of commerce … they have unique strengths and characteristics on which we can build.

  • "First, they are remarkably constant.
  • Second, chambers have a unique international status.
  • Third, they are based in local business communities and are locally led.
  • Fourth, chambers are independent, business-led entities.
  • Fifth, they have an existing infrastructure and service delivery capabilities which could be built on.”

Lord Heseltine continued, “I see the chambers as being at the heart of a local, business-led support infrastructure:  where they have far higher levels of membership and real influence; and where they are helping to galvanise the performance of a far broader range of businesses.  I envisage them having a central role:

  • working as the LEPs’ delivery partners
  • providing a one stop shop for businesses
  • acting as a focus for business engagement
  • using their increased legitimacy as broad-based business bodies to go toe to toe with decision-makers.”

Nick Handley, Executive Chairman of Sussex Enterprise, says that these are exciting times for Sussex Enterprise and the chamber movement and we look forward to working with government to implement Lord Heseltine’s recommendations.
