£30million Boost for Start-up Loans

There's now over £110 million available nationally to create tens of thousands of new businesses via the Start-Up Loan for Young People scheme. The scheme is running here in the South and South East of England by the Let’s Do Business Group.

The good news;

  • A £30 million boost to the Government’s Start-Up Loans scheme has been announced by the Prime Minister to give the next generation of entrepreneurs the finance and support to start their own business, helping Britain to get ahead in the global race.

  • Over 3000 people have applied or registered an interest in a Start-Up loan; these budding entrepreneurs receive support and mentoring to develop their ideas. When the business plan is robust and approved, they will be able to access financial support in the form of a low interest loan typically in the order of £2,500 with a repayment period of up to five years.

  • Age range has now been increased from 18-24 to 18-30 to meet demand, and help more new businesses secure affordable finance.

In the three months that the scheme has been live over £1.5 million worth of loans have already been approved, helping over 460 new businesses get off the ground. Around 100 new businesses a week are expected to reach approval stage in January, with thousands more in the months ahead.

Meet Lisa, a new Start-Up Loan Client from Sussex
Hair dresser by profession, mother of two, Lisa Brady could not afford to join anyone else's business as she needed to manage her own time. While working independently on a part-time basis her Aunt suggested she should start a business of her own. Lisa instantly liked the idea and sat down to make a business plan. The biggest challenge to start her business was to arrange for the capital. Pictured at left with our CEO Graham Marley, Lisa was interviewed by both BBC and ITV TV News, and BBC RadioSussexandSurrey.

She approached The Start-Up Loan Co who asked the Let's Do Business Group to assist with her business idea. Lisa was very clear on her plans and projections and, impressed with her dedication and can do attitude, a mentor was appointed and her application successfully approved. Lisa Brady, says ‘My mentor Steve Staples from Barclays was a life saver. He was very well versed with the industry and was able to guide me through the whole process’.

Lisa says, ‘Start-Up Loans is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I would not have been able to build my dream without the financial support and guidance of the scheme’.
